About: The ParaLong Drive Cup, a long drive golf championship event for athletes with permanent illnesses, injuries, and other physical challenges, is returning to Mesquite, Nevada. The event showcases the abilities of players who have overcome obstacles such as Amputation, Paraplegia, Brachial Plexus Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Blindness, Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury, Hemiplegia, and Down Syndrome, and who will compete in various divisions to take home the title of ParaLong Drive Cup Champion. This is an inspirational event in that it also provides athletes with an opportunity to enjoy camaraderie and competition with their peers.

The event is open to the public, and spectators are welcome to attend.

History of the Event:
In Rio, golf was included in the Olympics, but excluded from the Paralympics. This inspired Dean Jarvis to found the Amputee Long Drive Championship in 2013. It quickly became obvious, however, that athletes with amputations were not the only golfers out there who had overcome obstacles. The championship event expanded to include individuals with Paraplegia, Brachial Plexus Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Blindness, Down Syndrome, and more, and was rebranded as The ParaLong Drive Cup.

The event has been held nine times in various locations across the United States, including Knoxville, Tennessee; Winter Garden, Florida; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This will be its fourth stop in Mesquite. It will be held in Columbia, South Carolina, in 2018 as well.

Since its founding, the event has been featured on The Golf Channel and has garnered growing support, as well as an expanding population of players.

Who competes in the event?
Athletes from many great organizations have competed in previous events -  National Amputee Golf Association, North American One-Armed Golfers Association, Stand Up and Play Foundation, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Salute Military Golf Association, United States Adaptive Golf Alliance, Canadian Amputee Golf Association, Brotherhood of the Warriors, Never Say Never Foundation, PGA Hope Charleston, and Adaptive Golf Experience at Parris Island.

What is the draw for the media and/or public?
The ParaLong Drive Cup succeeds in providing athletes with permanent injuries, illnesses, and other physical challenges a golf-related athletic platform to smash perceptions. The Cup provides these skilled athletes an opportunity to demonstrate what they are capable of, and spectators can expect the golf balls to regularly travel over 300 yards, and occasionally over 350 yards. At previous events, it has even been possible to see balls fly over 400 yards – and yes, that is about four football fields.
